Roman SD

Roman SD is a serif font by Steve Deffeyes inspired by the capital letters carved into Trajan’s Column in Rome. Rather than mimicking the rigidity of stone-cut letterforms, it adopts a more calligraphic approach, softening the classical proportions with subtle pen-like strokes and warmth. The full character set was expanded in 2009.

The letterforms carry the weight and formality of Roman inscriptions but feel drawn rather than chiseled, making them approachable without losing their authority. High contrast between thick and thin strokes, paired with generous spacing, gives the font a refined, measured quality suited to text that needs presence and dignity.

Roman SD works well for book covers, formal invitations, heritage branding, classical posters, and any project that calls for a connection to historical typography or architectural tradition. It bridges ancient letterforms and contemporary design without pretense.
